Imagine being transported back to the early 1900s. You are standing where Shettleston New Parish Church stands today. It is more than just a building. It embodies faith, passion, community, and worship.
Shettleston New Parish Church has a fascinating story. Its story began long before its current name. The church was designed in the Neo-Gothic style by W. G. Rowan in 1897. Construction took place between 1901 and 1904. Old Red Sandstone was the primary building material.
Let’s talk about a special day. The memorial stone was laid on 11 October 1902. A steeple was erected with a spire. Buttresses were carefully stepped in at the narrow top. Art nouveau sculptures were added at the doorway. These included a large traceried gable window over the west door. The church hall was built earlier in 1899.
Stepping inside Shettleston New Parish Church reveals more beauty. The interior roof consists of ninety square panels. These panels feature an inscription of the Te Deum. The pipe organ was installed in 1904. Amazingly it is still in use today. The large stained glass window above the main door serves as a WWI memorial.
The congregation’s history is equally interesting. The parish was founded in 1896 by the United Presbyterian Church. Services were initially held at Eastmuir School. After the church building was completed the congregation was renamed Eastbank United Free Church. This followed the union between the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church. In 1929 another union occurred. This time with the Church of Scotland. The name became Eastbank Parish Church. It kept that name until 2007. Carntyne Old Church’s congregation united with Eastbank. This merger created Shettleston New Church.
Shettleston New Parish Church continues to evolve. In 2012 a major refurbishment took place. This provided better facilities. These included hall space, accommodation for toddler groups and easier access. A café and new kitchen were also added.
Further improvements are planned. Repairs and improvements are needed to the church itself. Thanks to generous donations work is underway. The church roof will be replaced. Dry rot will be eradicated. Damaged stonework will be repaired. The first phase of restoration was completed by the end of summer 2017.
Shettleston New Parish Church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to community. It is a place where faith is nurtured. The church offers various services. Sunday services are held at 11 am. These services are also livestreamed on YouTube.
