Picture this Eleven majestic three-story brick apartment buildings stand proudly. They line the 1000 block of Sherman Street in Denver’s vibrant Capitol Hill. This is the Sherman Street Historic District a place where history whispers through the aged brick and terra cotta. This unique neighborhood is affectionately known as Poets Row. Its buildings are named after literary greats like Robert Frost Emily Dickinson and Mark Twain.

The story of the Sherman Street Historic District begins in the early 20th century. Denver was booming. People flocked to the city for work. They needed places to live. The need for smaller less ornate apartments arose. These “modern” apartments were efficient. They offered a middle-class lifestyle for families and singles. This area became home to the first generation of apartments built on this land.

The district’s architectural significance is undeniable. Many buildings were designed by Charles D Strong. A prominent Denver architect he masterfully blended Art Deco Art Moderne and International styles. His work showcases a unique progression of modernist styles. You can actually trace his evolution as you walk the block. Notice the differences between the vertical emphasis of the early buildings and the horizontality in later structures. His designs are subtle. Yet they are stunning examples of Denver’s modernist architecture.

Consider the Robert Frost Apartments at 1001 Sherman Street. This 1929 building displays a blend of Spanish Colonial Revival and Modernist elements. It’s almost a twin of the Louisa May Alcott Apartments next door. Then look at the Mark Twain Apartments. Their off-center entry and rounded corners are distinctly Art Moderne. Notice the use of glass blocks a unique touch of the era.

The architectural details are captivating. Each building boasts unique terra cotta door surrounds and trim. Many original wooden casements grace the windows. Notice the subtle decorations. They draw your attention to the elegant entrances. The mature trees lining the streets and manicured lawns complete the charming image. Each building has a wonderful view of the Colorado State Capitol two blocks north on Sherman.

The Sherman Street Historic District is more than just pretty buildings. It stands as a testament to Denver’s growth. It represents a significant period in the city’s architectural and social history. As you stand here today you’re witnessing a chapter of Denver’s past. A past that continues to shape the present. Remember this unique blend of architecture and history. Remember Poets Row.
