Could a simple question spark a church’s existence? In April 1946, the Halen family asked Rev. M. Henry Tietjen about starting a mission in Sherman Oaks. This question planted the seed for Sherman Oaks Lutheran Church. Sherman Oaks Lutheran Church officially began on November 16, 1947. But its story started earlier. The Halen family, along with Mrs. Linda Snowden and Mrs. Tietjen, formed the core group. Initially, finding a place to worship was a challenge. Then, the La Reina Theatre on Ventura Blvd. became available. Their first service at the theater took place on January 12, 1947, with only a handful of Lutherans present. Friends and relatives from other congregations boosted attendance to 19. The church held its first communion service on March 2, 1947. By June 22, 1947, the growing group considered formally organizing. They finalized their constitution in August and held the organizational service at the Valley Park Country Club on November 16, 1947. Twenty-six charter members officially established Sherman Oaks Lutheran Church. In January 1948, the church purchased land at Dickens and Kester Streets. They faced a hurdle: re-zoning the property. After a hearing in August, the Los Angeles Zoning Commission granted approval. Construction could finally begin. Sherman Oaks Lutheran Church incorporated on February 6, 1948. The Women’s Missionary Guild formed and adopted its constitution the same year. In 1950, they broke ground for a combined chapel and social hall. Pastor Tietjen, having guided the church from its inception, became Pastor Emeritus. Rev. Harold H. Engelbrecht became the second pastor, installed during the church dedication on April 22, 1951. The new church boasted beautiful furnishings, including a redwood altar, pulpit, and lectern. A rebuilt pipe organ filled the sanctuary with music. The church purchased a parsonage for Pastor Engelbrecht. Pastor Engelbrecht served until early 1955. Rev. Elmer Streufert served as interim pastor. Rev. William Wittrock became the third pastor in 1956. Under Pastor Wittrock, the church experienced significant growth, becoming one of the fastest-growing in the district. He served until 1968. Rev. Dennis Schaffert became the fourth pastor in 1969. A devastating arson fire struck the church in 1974, causing extensive damage. The congregation rallied. Members donated time and skills to rebuild, demonstrating their resilience. A Children’s Center, opening in 1974, became a vital part of the church and community. Sherman Oaks Lutheran Church continued to evolve, facing challenges and celebrating triumphs. It remains a testament to the power of faith and community.
