Before you stands Sheridan Square Garden a vibrant oasis in the heart of Greenwich Village. This small triangular plot wasn’t always a haven of beauty and tranquility.

Sheridan Square itself was dedicated in 1896 honoring General Philip Sheridan a Civil War hero. But for much of the 20th century it was a chaotic traffic island. Illegally parked cars delivery trucks and even motorcycles dominated the space. This was hardly a fitting tribute to the great general. A local drug hangout nicknamed “The Haven” or “juice bar” added to the area’s unsavory reputation.

However a transformation began in 1982. Two remarkable women community activist Vera Schneider and garden designer Pamela Berdan spearheaded a project to revitalize the area. Schneider saw a garden as a way to combat the burgeoning drug trade. Berdan’s design skills brought the vision to life. The result is the Sheridan Square Viewing Garden a testament to their determination.

The garden wasn’t built overnight. The Sheridan Square Triangle Association a group of dedicated neighbors convinced the Parks Department to transform the neglected triangle. Archaeological digs even unearthed Native American artifacts. Imagine the history revealed beneath the soil. The Sheridan Square Garden is a symbol of community action and a tribute to history.

Today Sheridan Square Garden is a beautiful space filled with seasonal blooms. Tulips azaleas rhododendrons and crabapples brighten the spring. Summer brings a riot of other perennials and annuals. Autumn displays the colors of asters geraniums and the changing foliage. The garden is a tranquil escape a charming testament to the power of community. A place that honors both General Sheridan and the history of the land itself. It’s a treasure that is cherished by its neighbors. A unique green space maintained by dedicated volunteers. The garden remains a symbol of the unity and commitment of Greenwich Village.
