Fifty years ago, could anyone have predicted the growth of San Antonio? Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church certainly couldn’t. Back then, it sat on the outskirts, northwest of what is now Interstate 410. Today, we stand before Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church, witnessing its own story of expansion and adaptation. The church has evolved alongside San Antonio. In the 1980s, Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church expanded its school facilities. In 1997, a new church building was added. Now, they’ve continued to grow, adding a multi-purpose building. This building isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a response to the needs of a thriving community. The Medical Center area nearby has boomed. Young families have flocked to the neighborhood. Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church’s school, once just pre-K through 5th grade, now includes middle school. This growth necessitated the construction of a new community center. The old gym, once sufficient, was simply too small. The new space is versatile. It houses a full-size gym. It boasts a stage for drama productions. It provides a home for the contemporary service. It can be rented out for various events. Even Bible studies finally have a dedicated space. Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church has always been about more than just Sunday service. They’re committed to serving their community. They helped launch Alamo Hills Church, a new church plant in Alamo Ranch. They even tithed a portion of their building fund to support Alamo Hills. They offer Saturday contemporary services at 6pm, Sunday classic hymns at 9am, and modern hymns at 10:30am. This dedication extends to their school. It’s their number one outreach program, attracting families who might not otherwise be involved in the church. Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church understands the importance of adapting to reach its community. It’s a testament to their commitment to walking alongside their members and neighbors, offering them a place to connect, grow, and share in their faith.
