Have you ever wondered how faith perseveres, even amidst tumultuous times? Here, before the Shenzhen Christian Church, stands a testament to that enduring spirit. Shenzhen Christian Church isn’t just a modern structure. It carries within it over a century of history, echoing the resilience of the Christian community in Shenzhen. The story begins in 1846 when the first Protestant missionaries arrived in the area, then known as Bao’an. These early pioneers, from the Basel Mission and the Rhenish Missionary Society, planted the seeds of Christianity. They established 27 churches across the region. Shenzhen Christian Church traces its roots to a church founded in Luohu District in 1898 by the Rhenish Missionary Society. Rebuilt in 1949, this church weathered the storms of the Cultural Revolution. The church was seized, its activities ceased, and its staff were forced into farm labor. Yet, faith found a way to bloom again. In 1984, with the return of Deng Xiaoping and the restoration of religious freedoms, Shenzhen Christian Church reopened its doors. It became a beacon of hope, the first church in Shenzhen to resume services after the Cultural Revolution. The congregation grew rapidly, outgrowing its space. Then, in a remarkable display of support, the Shenzhen government granted land in Meilin for a new church building. Construction began in 1999, funded largely by donations from local believers. The new Shenzhen Christian Church, completed in 2001, stands as a symbol of the community’s unwavering faith and generosity. This impressive structure, costing 30 million yuan, boasts a modern design, spacious halls, and a striking 28-meter height. Shenzhen Christian Church continues to serve as a vibrant spiritual hub. It offers multiple Sunday services and weekday meetings, catering to a diverse and growing congregation.
