Opened in 1991, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport has grown into a major aviation hub. Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport serves the bustling city of Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta region. The airport’s original name, Shenzhen Huangtian Airport, reflects its location near Huangtian village. Now known as Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, it has undergone significant expansions to accommodate its ever-increasing passenger and cargo traffic. A second runway, capable of handling the massive Airbus A380, opened in 2011. This expansion was part of the preparations for the 2011 Summer Universiade. Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport is a major hub for Shenzhen Airlines and Donghai Airlines. It’s also a focus city for larger airlines like China Southern and Hainan Airlines. The airport plays a key role as a cargo hub, with SF Airlines and UPS Airlines operating significant cargo operations. In 2013, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport opened its striking new Terminal 3. This modern terminal replaced the older Terminals A, B, and D. It boasts a unique design, often described as resembling a manta ray. The spacious terminal features 62 boarding gates and can handle any type of aircraft. Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport is conveniently connected to the city by various transportation options. The Ground Transportation Center, adjacent to the terminal, offers bus, taxi, and metro access. Metro Line 11 provides a direct link to the city center and other key areas. Ferries also connect the airport to Hong Kong International Airport, allowing for seamless transfers. Travelers can even bypass immigration and customs checks when using this ferry service. Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport continues to grow and adapt to the demands of modern air travel. A new satellite concourse opened in 2021, further expanding its capacity. This concourse is connected to Terminal 3 by an automated people mover system. Future plans include integration with the Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway, further enhancing the airport’s connectivity.
