Here at the Shenzhen Art Museum, prepare to be captivated. This is not just a building. It is a portal to artistic expression. The Shenzhen Art Museum is the oldest art exhibition unit in Shenzhen. It started its journey in 1976. Back then, it was known as Shenzhen Exhibition Center.

Let’s step inside. The Shenzhen Art Museum boasts a diverse collection. It has amassed 8,678 artistic masterpieces. You will find Chinese paintings and oil paintings here. Also expect printmaking, sculpture, and calligraphic works.

Did you know the Shenzhen Art Museum has a new venue? It’s located in Longhua District. The new art museum opened its doors to the public. It was the first of the city’s ten new cultural landmarks to begin operation. Inside this new venue are 18 exhibition halls. A semi-outdoor area showcases sculpture exhibitions. There are also lecture halls. An art book reading room and an art-themed restaurant are here too. These areas provide multifunctional spaces for all visitors.

Currently, the Shenzhen Art Museum hosts various exhibitions. “Shiota Chiharu: The Soul Trembles” displays works by Japanese artist Shiota Chiharu. She is known for installations expressing memories and dreams. The exhibition features large-scale installations. They use red and black threads extensively. Drawings, sculptures, photos, and videos are also on display.

Another exhibition is “Moment of Fantasy”. It commemorates the 160th anniversary of Qi Baishi’s birth. The exhibition displays 160 art and literary works by the revered painter. They are on loan from the Beijing Fine Art Academy.

The Shenzhen Art Museum also presents “Looking Back and Going Ahead”. This exhibition features works depicting milestones in Shenzhen’s history. These milestones date back to the reform and opening up. It also shows the trajectory of art development in the city.

“Interwoven Scape” integrates art and technology. It is the first Shenzhen exhibition by OPLINEPRIZE. This recognizes outstanding contemporary digital artwork. Seventeen works by 21 artists are showcased. Most are making their debut in China.

Lastly, “Thriving Aesthetic” outlines the museum’s development. Exhibits are selected from the Shenzhen Art Museum’s collection. It highlights the museum’s role in the city’s cultural scene.

To get here, take Line 5 or 7 to Tai’an Station. Then, take Exit C. The Shenzhen Art Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Remember, it is closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
