Did you ever hear of a neighborhood named after a city commissioner? Shenoy Nagar in Chennai is just that. This vibrant suburb got its name from J.P.L. Shenoy, a former Commissioner of the Corporation of Madras. He envisioned a residential area for the middle class. Shenoy Nagar stands as a testament to his vision. His successor, C. Narasimhan, saw the project through. He fittingly named it Shenoy Nagar, honoring Shenoy’s original idea. Shenoy Nagar is nestled within the larger Anna Nagar region. It’s bordered by Anna Nagar East to the north, Kilpauk to the north and east, Chetpet to the southeast, Aminjikarai to the south, Arumbakkam to the southwest, and Anna Nagar to the northwest. In the heart of Shenoy Nagar lies Thiru Vi Ka Park. This park offers a welcome green space amidst the bustling city. In 2006, the Tamil Nadu government opened a skating park within Thiru Vi Ka Park. It was designed to encourage kids to take up skating. Getting to Shenoy Nagar is easy thanks to the Metro. The Shenoy Nagar Metro station connects the area to Chennai International Airport and Chennai Central. Under the DMK government in 1967, Shenoy Nagar got its first swimming pool. The Chintamani market also opened during this period. It provided residents a convenient place to shop for supplies. They no longer needed to travel to Triplicane or Parry’s. However, tragedy struck the market when lightning killed three people. This event became a somber part of Shenoy Nagar’s history.
