Isn’t it amazing that some places get their names from the ground beneath them? That’s the story of Shelltown in San Diego. This neighborhood got its name from the abundance of shells in its sandy soil. Shelltown is part of Southeastern San Diego. It sits between National City, Barrio Logan, Southcrest, and 43rd Avenue.

Back in the day, Shelltown was the place to be for naval officers. Imagine living just moments away from your ship. Their homes offered views of the ships, ready for duty calls. Most of the houses you see here in Shelltown were built between 1920 and 1969.

Mexican Americans have been part of Shelltown since the 1910s. Later, many Filipino immigrants came to Shelltown. This was especially true from the Vietnam War era into the 1990s. Many Filipinos joined the United States Navy. They chose Shelltown for its affordable housing and closeness to Naval Base San Diego. Other neighborhoods like Alta Vista and Bay Terraces also attracted them.

Shelltown has seen its share of challenges. One person remembers Shelltown as chaotic and scary in their childhood. Gang violence affected many young people. Joining a gang seemed inevitable for some, who felt victimized. But despite these challenges, the people of Shelltown found ways to build community.

Speaking of community, art plays a big role here in Shelltown. You can see murals at the neighborhood entrances. Local artist Mario Torero led the creation of the Alpha Street mural. These artworks reflect the spirit and history of Shelltown.

For getting around, Shelltown is well-connected. The San Diego Trolley Blue Line stops at the Pacific Fleet station. The Route 929 bus runs along Main Street. And if you’re driving, Interstate 5, Interstate 15, and Interstate 805 are easily accessible.

Shelltown also values education. Balboa Elementary School won a national award for its math program. It was recognized as one of the best in the country. This shows the dedication to learning here in Shelltown.
