Across the shimmering Maqta Channel, the Sheikh Zayed Bridge rises like a sculpted wave. The Sheikh Zayed Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a testament to ambition and artistry. It connects Abu Dhabi to Saadiyat Island. This bridge is part of the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan highway. It’s named after the UAE’s former president. He was a key figure in the country’s development. The bridge’s design is meant to evoke the rolling sand dunes of the desert. Its curves are striking. British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid designed this masterpiece. The Sheikh Zayed Bridge is 842 meters long. It boasts three main arches supported by four piers and additional supports on the Abu Dhabi side. The main span stretches 140 meters wide. The bridge is made of steel and concrete, reinforced with steel cables. Construction began in 2003 and took seven years to complete. The roadway is 68 meters wide. It carries 16,000 vehicles per hour on two four-lane carriageways. There are also emergency lanes and a pedestrian walkway. The highest arch reaches 63 meters above the deck. At night, the Sheikh Zayed Bridge transforms. Over 200 automated lights create thirteen artistic scenarios. The lighting design is the work of Dutchman Rogier van der Heide. It enhances the bridge’s flowing form. The Sheikh Zayed Bridge officially opened on November 25, 2010. Sheikh Khalifa, the President of the UAE, inaugurated it. The bridge cost over 300 million euros to build. It stands as a symbol of modern engineering and artistic vision.
