Did you know the Shawsheen River snakes its way through Bedford Massachusetts? This isn’t just any river. The Shawsheen River at Great Road in Bedford holds a piece of history. Legend whispers its name means “serpent” or “serpentine” a nod to its twisting course. Others say it signifies “Great Spring” or “Beauty’s Pathway”. The Shawsheen River is more than just a pretty name. It’s a vital artery of Northeastern Massachusetts flowing 25 miles from its headwaters to the Merrimack River in Lawrence.

For centuries the Shawsheen River powered industry. Grist saw and textile mills thrived along its banks in Andover from the 17th to the 20th centuries. The Ballardvale Mills and the American Woolen Company’s Shawsheen Mills were just two examples. These bustling businesses employed countless workers shaping the region’s economy.

But the Shawsheen River isn’t without its challenges. Flooding has been a recurring issue. The river’s fury was unleashed in 1936 1996 2006 and 2010. In 2006 Mother’s Day weekend saw water levels 8.6 feet above normal causing significant damage.

In the 19th century mill dams harnessed the river’s power. Today these dams are obsolete. They harm the river ecosystem. The Town of Andover has been working to remove these dams restoring the river’s natural flow. The Marland Place Dam and the Balmoral Dam were removed in 2017. This dam removal project aimed to revive the river’s ecosystem improve fish spawning and reduce flood risks. The Ballardvale Dam however remains a point of discussion. Its historical significance has made its removal a complex issue.

Despite its tumultuous past the Shawsheen River offers recreational opportunities. You can hike fish canoe or kayak along its banks. The Shawsheen River has inspired environmental groups as well. The Shawsheen River Stream Team and the Shawsheen River Environmental Action Team tackled pollution and debris removal. The Shawsheen River Watershed Association continues the effort. It protects and restores this vital waterway.

The Shawsheen River at Great Road in Bedford is a living testament to both the beauty and the challenges of nature’s power. It’s a river with a rich history a powerful presence and a future that’s continually being shaped.
