Established in 1894 Shawlands Academy stands proudly on Moss-Side Road. It’s a Glasgow landmark a testament to generations of learning. But its story goes back further. A private school bearing the same name existed since 1857. It was located in Skirving Street. This school later became state-owned. It was then known as Crossmyloof Annexe. It served as a feeder school for Shawlands Academy in the 1960s. The Academy we know today opened in a different building. That building on Pollokshaws Road now houses Shawlands Primary School.

But Shawlands Academy’s history is not without its shadows. A tragic event in 1998 involving a fatal stabbing brought the realities of youth violence into sharp focus. The incident tragically highlighted racial tensions. The case involved pupils or former pupils of Shawlands Academy. It underscored the challenges of integrating a diverse student body. It also led to significant community efforts to improve race relations.
Today Shawlands Academy continues its mission. It provides high-quality education for over 1300 students. It strives to combine traditional Scottish education with a modern curriculum. The school has made substantial investments in technology. This has enhanced learning particularly in Business Education Computing and the Sciences.
