In the heart of Wynnefield Heights, Philadelphia, stands the Sharon Baptist Church. It’s a place where history whispers and faith resonates. A small group, led by Rev. Charles H. Bernard, started it all in June 1934. For three years, they borrowed spaces, holding onto their vision of a permanent home. Sharon Baptist Church faced many changes during its first twelve years. But the congregation’s faith remained unwavering. In October 1947, Rev. Phillip M. King became their pastor, guiding them for the next 34 years. Under his leadership, Sharon Baptist Church achieved financial stability, acquired new property, and overcame debt. Then, in January 1982, Bishop Keith Wayne Reed, Sr. arrived. He redefined the church’s mission, focusing on “evangelizing the lost, edifying the saints, and exalting the Savior.” This renewed focus propelled Sharon Baptist Church forward. Attendance soared from 280 in 1982 to over 2,000 by 1997. The church outgrew its space in southwest Philadelphia, prompting the move to its current location in Wynnefield Heights in September 1999. Today, Sharon Baptist Church continues to thrive, serving God and embracing new challenges. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and the vision of those who came before.
