Listen closely to the tale of devotion and justice embodied here at the Shani Temple. This sacred space in Kolkata offers a glimpse into the profound influence of Shani Dev. Shani Dev is revered as the dispenser of karmic justice.
The Shani Temple provides solace and guidance. It is a place where devotees seek blessings for a balanced life. Here at the Shani Temple, people connect with divine forces. It is a place for introspection and spiritual growth.
Shani, also known as Saturn, holds a significant position in Hindu astrology. He is the brother of Yama, the god of death. Shani Dev ensures that everyone receives the consequences of their actions. Some believe Shani is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is tasked with fairly distributing rewards and punishments.
The story of Shani Dev’s birth is quite fascinating. The Sun God married Sandhya. She was a devoted wife. They had three children: Vaivasvata Manu, Yama, and Yami. Sandhya struggled with the Sun God’s intense heat. She created Chaya, a shadow replica of herself. Sandhya entrusted her children to Chaya. She asked her to care for the Sun God in her absence.
Sandhya then retreated to the woods to perform penance. Meanwhile, Chaya bore three more children to the Sun God. These children were Manu, Shani, and Tapti. While Shani was in Chaya’s womb, she was deeply devoted to serving the Sun God. The baby’s complexion turned black due to the Sun God’s heat. Thus, Shani was born with a dark complexion.
Upon seeing Shani, the Sun God was taken aback by his dark color. He doubted his paternity. Shani’s gaze caused an eclipse and the Sun God saw it as bad luck. Angered by his father’s reaction, Shani cursed him. The curse caused the Sun God to turn black. From birth, there was tension between Shani and his father.
Chaya lovingly cared for her children. She was a devoted worshiper of Shiva. One day, while preparing food for Shiva, a hungry young Shani demanded to be fed. Chaya insisted he wait until after the puja. This angered Shani and he kicked his mother. As a result, one of Shani’s legs became lame.
Shani’s devotion to Shiva pleased the deity. Shiva clarified why Shani was born black. This fostered understanding between father and son. Shiva blessed Shani. He made him the god of justice. Shani would now distribute rewards and punishments based on people’s deeds.
Remember Shani Dev’s role as a fair judge as you leave this temple. May his blessings guide you towards righteous actions. May it lead you to a life of balance and harmony.
