Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Houston, Texas, stands Shalom Baptist Church. Its story begins not in Texas, but in Newport News, Virginia. In 1955, twelve souls gathered in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Goode, led by the Reverend Dr. Joseph Brackett Reid. The church’s name, Shalom Baptist Church, resonated with a powerful message of peace, inspired by Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The first song, led by Mrs. Mary Frances Reid, echoed the sentiment of a new beginning.

Shalom Baptist Church’s early years were marked by a spirit of community. Without a permanent home, the congregation was welcomed by the Church of God, a white congregation, who shared their building. This act of kindness allowed Shalom Baptist Church to hold services and eventually purchase their first building, affectionately known as “Little Shalom.” The church quickly became a pillar of the community. It grew to over 700 members, boasting 20-25 clubs and two Sunday services. The church even established the first Child Care Center founded by a Black church in Newport News in 1965.

In 1965, Shalom Baptist Church purchased its current building from the United Church of Christ. This momentous occasion was marked by a celebratory caravan, complete with local high school bands. Over the years, Shalom Baptist Church continued to evolve. Six members answered the call to ministry. Reverend Dr. Reid and Mrs. Reid guided the church with unwavering strength and wisdom.

After Reverend Dr. and Mrs. Reid’s passing, Shalom Baptist Church welcomed Reverend Nathaniel Huggins as their second pastor in 1990. He implemented a centralized financial system, organized a Junior Church, and expanded the church’s leadership. Tragedy struck in 1993 when a fire damaged the sanctuary and fellowship hall. The community rallied around Shalom Baptist Church. Neighboring churches opened their doors, offering a place of worship during the renovations. This resilience and support allowed Shalom Baptist Church to return home, stronger than ever.

Reverend Peter Evans became the third pastor in 1995. He brought about significant changes, including the establishment of a Christian Education Board and the renovation of the Educational Building. He also oversaw the creation of the church newsletter, “The Shalomite,” and the establishment of two scholarship funds.

In 1999, Reverend Derrick Perkins, Sr. took the helm as Shalom Baptist Church’s fourth pastor. He continued to build upon the church’s legacy, focusing on spiritual growth and community outreach. The church purchased adjacent land for additional parking due to its growing congregation, a testament to its continued impact. Shalom Baptist Church’s story is a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of community.
