Ever felt the magic of Shakespeare under the open sky? The Shakespeare Company Berlin welcomes you. Founded in 1999 by actor and translator Christian Leonard this company is unique. It’s a collective a group of artists who make all decisions together. They reject the traditional top-down structure of many theaters.

Initially the Shakespeare Company Berlin had no fixed home. They performed in unusual places. These included a church ruin and even a tent by the Spree River. Their shows were always close to their audience. Imagine the intimacy of a performance in a church ruin.

Since 2011 they found a home in Schoneberger Suedgelande. They built an open-air stage. Rain or shine the shows went on. When it rained they used a large industrial building. This was a 4000 square meter locomotive hall. Clever right? Making use of existing spaces.

In 2017 they covered their open-air stage. They added elements from the Globe Theatre replica in the movie Anonymus. This added to the immersive experience. In 2022 they moved again. Their new home is a beautiful semi-circular theater at the Insulaner summer baths. This was built specifically for them.

The Shakespeare Company Berlin is more than just a theater group. They also have a children’s and youth theater program. Shakespeare Kids introduces children to the magic of Shakespeare. They use role-playing and games to encourage their creativity. Since 2019 they even have an academy. Adults and students can take workshops to learn acting techniques. The workshops are led by the company’s actors.

The Shakespeare Company Berlin’s commitment to Shakespeare is unwavering. Their productions are lively and engaging. They use their own German translations. This makes Shakespeare accessible to a modern audience. They use live music. Their performances are always close to the audience. This recreates the spirit of Elizabethan theatre. It is a truly special experience. So enjoy the show.
