Shaheed Minar

On a humid Kolkata afternoon, a group of pigeons took flight from the Shaheed Minar, startled by a nearby street vendor’s call. Shaheed Minar. A name that whispers tales of triumphs and tributes. Originally known as the Ochterlony Monument, this towering structure stands as a silent witness to changing times. It was erected in 1828, a tribute to Major-general Sir David Ochterlony, a key figure in the British East India Company. The monument celebrated his victories against the Marathas in 1804 and the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War. The design, a fascinating blend of architectural influences, is a story in itself. The foundation echoes the grandeur of Egyptian pyramids, while the column draws inspiration from Syrian architecture. The dome, a graceful curve against the Kolkata skyline, is distinctly Turkish. The Shaheed Minar rises 48 meters, a height once described by Mark Twain as “cloud-kissing”. A winding staircase of 223 steps leads to the top, offering a panoramic view of the bustling city below. The monument, built by Burn & Company, isn’t just an architectural marvel. It holds deep historical significance. In 1969, the monument was rededicated. It was renamed Shaheed Minar, meaning “Martyrs’ Monument” in Bengali and Hindi, to honor the martyrs of India’s freedom struggle. The Shaheed Minar Maidan, the vast field to the south, has become a stage for political rallies and gatherings. Interestingly, the first political meeting here was led by Rabindranath Tagore, protesting the killings at Hijli Detention Camp. Today, accessing the upper levels of Shaheed Minar requires permission. This restriction followed a tragic incident in 1997 when a tourist fell from the lower balcony. The monument stands as a reminder of the past, a symbol of resilience and a tribute to those who fought for freedom. Its towering presence at Esplanade makes it a landmark that can’t be missed. The Shaheed Minar isn’t just a monument. It’s a story etched in stone, a testament to a city’s rich and layered past.
