Born in 1682 into a Jat Sikh family in Amritsar Baba Deep Singh’s life was marked by devotion and martial prowess. He learned weaponry and Gurmukhi scripture. He served Guru Gobind Singh at Talwandi Sabo meticulously copying the Guru Granth Sahib. He wasn’t merely a scholar though. He was a leader a Misldar.
In 1757 Ahmad Shah Durrani desecrated the Harimandir Sahib. He blew up the shrine and filled the sacred pool with the entrails of slaughtered cows. Baba Deep Singh at 75 years old could not tolerate this sacrilege. He vowed to rebuild the temple. Five hundred men joined his cause. Their numbers swelled as they marched toward Amritsar.
The battle at Gohalwar was fierce. Twenty thousand Afghans faced the five thousand Sikhs. Baba Deep Singh fought bravely. He suffered a fatal blow to the neck. His head was severed. Yet legend has it he picked up his head his 15kg khanda still in his other hand and continued fighting. He reached the Harimandir Sahib fulfilling his vow to lay his head at the Guru’s feet.
