Hidden within Delhi’s Wazirabad area lies the Shah Alam Tomb. It’s a place where the echoes of history whisper stories of emperors and empires. The Shah Alam Tomb stands at the crossroads of Outer Ring Road and Loni Road, near the Yamuna River’s banks. A three-domed mosque graces the site, adding to its allure. This isn’t the tomb of the famous Mughal emperor Shah Alam II. This tomb belongs to a saint who lived during Feroze Shah Tughlaq’s reign in the 14th century. Feroze Shah Tughlaq himself is believed to have built the tomb. Even the infamous Timur the Lame is said to have camped nearby in 1398, crossing the Yamuna at this very point. The mosque near the Shah Alam Tomb is an architectural marvel. Its prayer chamber, two bays deep, is pierced by five arches. A smaller chamber, adorned with intricately carved screens, likely served as a space for women. The saint’s square tomb, enclosed and resting on twelve pillars, sits within the mosque’s courtyard. A nine-arched bridge, a relic of the Tughlaq era, spans the nearby nullah. It’s Delhi’s oldest bridge still in use, a testament to the builders’ skill. The Shah Alam Tomb isn’t just a tomb and a mosque. It’s a portal to a time when empires rose and fell, where saints were revered, and where architecture spoke volumes. The tomb offers a glimpse into Delhi’s rich past, a quiet sanctuary amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.
