Was it a roar or a rumble that echoed through Shah Alam Stadium? It was hard to tell, perhaps both, as 80,372 fans celebrated a Selangor goal. The Shah Alam Stadium has been the home of the Red Giants, Selangor’s football team, since its grand opening on July 16, 1994. This architectural marvel, with its free-standing arc, the longest in the world, has witnessed countless victories and heartbreaks. Shah Alam Stadium wasn’t just built for football. It was designed as a multi-purpose stadium, equipped for athletics and large-scale events. The 1998 Commonwealth Games were a pivotal reason for its construction, a project that commenced on January 1, 1990.

Shah Alam Stadium has seen more than just sporting events. Bon Jovi rocked its stage in 1995, their first ever Malaysian concert. Even a portion of the stadium served as a temporary home for Universiti Teknologi MARA’s Faculty of Performing Arts. The design, inspired by the Poljud stadium in Split, Croatia, made Shah Alam Stadium a landmark. Its six-level semi-enclosed spaces and over 5,500 car parking bays made it a hub for Selangor. A go-kart racing circuit added another dimension, even featuring in a challenge on The Amazing Race Asia.

The Shah Alam Stadium has a rich history, hosting international tournaments and local derbies alike. The 1994 Malaysia Cup final, the first held in the stadium, saw Singapore defeat Pahang 4-0, with Fandi Ahmad lifting the trophy. The stadium’s field, adhering to FIFA regulations at 105 x 68 meters, has been the stage for many dramatic matches. The 2007 AFF Championship semi-final between Malaysia and Singapore, moved from the Bukit Jalil National Stadium due to renovations, ended in a tense 1-1 draw. Exhibition matches added spice to the Shah Alam Stadium calendar. In 2008, Chelsea triumphed over a Malaysia Select team 2-0, and in 2011, Arsenal faced a Malaysia XI as part of their Asia Tour.

Despite its grandeur, Shah Alam Stadium has faced challenges. Years of neglect led to disrepair. By 2020, the stadium’s condition, especially the deteriorating roof and pitch, raised safety concerns. This led to the Malaysian Football League considering barring the stadium from hosting Super League matches. Renovations have been a recurring theme. RM 3.4 million was invested in 2011, followed by RM 2.4 million in 2014, addressing lighting, roof repairs, and pitch improvements. Further work in 2016 upgraded the lighting to 2,000 lux and replaced the field. However, time took its toll.

Currently, the Shah Alam Stadium is undergoing a significant transformation. Demolition and reconstruction, a project costing RM787 million, started in 2024. The aim is to reopen the Shah Alam Stadium as part of the Shah Alam Sports Complex in 2030. This marks a new chapter for the stadium, promising a modern, revitalized venue for Selangor and the world.
