Can you hear the echoes of faith? Can you hear the echoes from Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church? Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church has stood as a testament to faith in Detroit since March 1925. It was born from a deep love for the Lord. It was founded by Reverend J. W. Graham. The first service was held in an old house in the Varn Quarters. Imagine the scene. A small group of believers gathered on March 15th, 1925. Founding members like Brother Grant Butler, Sister Emma Butler, and Brother Tom Sharpe were present. Sister Lula Sharpe, Brother Morgan (Bud) Horne, and Sister Susie Horne were also among them. So were Sister Lillie Mae Moore and Sister Mattie Mays. They gathered in that humble space, united by their faith. This marked the beginning of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church’s journey. Reverend Graham led the congregation for a year, laying the foundation for the church’s future. Over the years, Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church has been shepherded by many dedicated pastors. Reverend M. B. Butler, Reverend W.M. Fudge, and Reverend L.S. Wrice carried the torch. Reverend Frank Carter, Reverend Luther B. Robinson, and Reverend Jimmy Williams Jr. also served. Today, Rev. Dr. Willie J. Harris leads the congregation. Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church stands on the principle of “Seeking the Lost and Strengthening the Weak Among Us.” Their goal is clear. They aim to win the world for Jesus Christ.
