In 1864, a group of African American pioneers bravely broke away from the Providence Baptist Church of the Kelly Settlement Community. They yearned for their own space, a place where their voices could rise in collective praise. This yearning led to the birth of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Atlanta. Shady Grove Baptist Church began with just eight members, two deacons, a clerk, and a handful of community members. Their faith was their foundation. Their first services were held in a humble log cabin. As their numbers grew, so did their need for a larger space. Shady Grove Baptist Church expanded, a testament to their unwavering faith. The church saw many pastors guide its flock. Names like Rev. I. B. Travis, Rev. R. W. Jones, Rev. Luke McInnis, and Rev. J. J. Jordan echoed through the sanctuary. In 1917, a deacon named George Dahmer was captivated by a sermon delivered by Rev. R. W. Woullard, Sr. Dahmer invited Rev. Woullard to preach at Shady Grove Baptist Church. This invitation led to a pastorate that spanned over four decades. The leadership of Rev. R. W. Woullard, Jr., beginning in 1969, marked a period of significant growth for Shady Grove Baptist Church. The congregation more than doubled in size. This expansion necessitated a new sanctuary, built in 1993, complete with a fellowship hall and Sunday school classrooms. The dedication sermon was preached by none other than Rev. E.V. Hill, senior pastor at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Rev. Woullard, Jr. continued to serve until his passing in 2005. His legacy, however, was far from over. His youngest son, Rev. Reginald Woullard, Sr., stepped into his father’s shoes. He became the next pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Under Pastor Reginald Woullard, Sr.’s leadership, the church experienced another wave of growth, both in membership and resources. New ministries blossomed, a webcast brought services to a wider audience, and a transportation ministry ensured accessibility for all. The church acquired 32 acres of land, a promise of future expansion. The growing congregation led to three Sunday services, yet even this wasn’t enough. An overflow section became necessary. Through prayer, planning, and financial commitment, the R.W. Woullard, Jr. Family Life Center, with a capacity of 1,000, was dedicated in 2016. Shady Grove Baptist Church’s reach extended beyond its local community. In 2007, they adopted Monrovia, Liberia. They provided aid, remodeled churches and orphanages, and offered support to those in need. Even a pandemic couldn’t silence the spirit of Shady Grove Baptist Church. When the doors closed in 2020, Pastor Woullard preached to empty pews, his words reaching members online. Shady Grove Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and community. Its journey, from a small log cabin to a thriving congregation, is a story of unwavering devotion and a commitment to serving others.
