The Sportgemeinschaft von 1874 Hannover e.V. is a long name. It is often shortened to SG 74. The club was founded in 1874 in Linden. Now, its headquarters are south of the Großen Garten. The address is In der Steintormasch 48.
SG 74 resulted from the merger of seven clubs. Six of these clubs originated in Linden. The oldest founding club was MTV zu Linden. It was established on November 5, 1874. In 1879, the Arbeiterturnverein Linden split off. It later changed its name to Turnerschaft Linden. Other founding clubs emerged in the early 20th century. LSV Alexandria was founded in 1903. TV Jahn Linden followed three years later. Turnklub Linden was formed in 1914. It came from the Jugendverein Linden-Süd. TSV Linden and DSC Hannover were founded in 1923.
The 1930s were marked by mergers. In 1931, TSV Linden, TV Jahn Linden, and Turnerschaft Linden merged. They formed Turngemeinde Linden. A few years later, MTV zu Linden and Turnklub Linden merged. They became Lindener TV. In 1938, it merged with LSV Alexandria to form Lindener TSV. In 1939, Lindener TSV and Turngemeinde Linden merged. This created TSG 74 Hannover. It was a large club with over 1,200 members. In 1940, TSG merged with DSC Hannover. This formed DTSG 74 Hannover. The present-day club was formed in 1965. It happened after a merger with Volkssportverein Vorwärts Linden.
The SG von 1874 Hannover e.V. has many sports. These include soccer, handball and field handball. Also, there is korbball, hockey, tennis and table tennis. You can enjoy gymnastics and parent-child gymnastics. Petanque is also offered.
In 1943, the women’s handball team of DTSG 74 Hannover qualified. They played in the final round of the German field handball championship. The team beat Eimsbütteler TV and Reichsbahn-SV Münster. They reached the quarter-finals. The team from Hanover lost to Kieler TV with 4:6. In 1949, after the Second World War, DTSG became Lower Saxony champion.
The soccer players participated in the Gauliga Südhannover-Braunschweig in 1944/45. The team was assigned to Group Hannover. The team had three wins with 22:1 goals.
Willi Matthias was a member. He was a hurdler. He participated in the 1960 Olympic Summer Games.
In October 1963, a new clubhouse was inaugurated. This was achieved with the support of many. Lower Saxony, the city of Hanover and businesses helped. Members also donated and contributed with labor.
In 2019, an information board was set up. It explains the history of SG74. The club celebrated its 150th anniversary. It held a sports and family festival.
SG von 1874 Hannover e.V. supports the Hanover Marathon. They run refreshment point 11. It is located at Nienburger Str. near the Wilhelm Busch Museum. They have been supporting the marathon since 2007.
SG 74 Hannover is still closely connected to Linden. A large part of the club came from worker sports clubs in Linden. Today, you can play soccer and tennis here. Other sports include FUWATE and Quidditch.
