Founded in 1896 as MTV Misburg the SG Misburg has a rich history. It began as a men’s gymnastics club. A women’s section was added in 1923. A few years later in 1926 a sports field was built. This was located on what is now Ludwig-Jahn-Strasse. Handball Faustball and track and field events were held there. The Nazis banned two Misburg clubs in 1933. These were Männerturnverein Vater Jahn and Freie Turnerschaft Misburg. They merged with MTV Misburg. The new club was called Turnerschaft Misburg von 1896. After World War II the SG Misburg resumed operations in 1945. This was with the permission of the British military government. In 1948 boxing was added. In 1949 SG Misburg gained use of the Weiße Erde sports facility. This later became the Misburg sports park. This was a municipal facility in the then-independent city of Misburg. In 1960 boxing and football split off. Boxing returned in 1969 but finally dissolved in 1976. Women’s teams began to achieve notable success in the late 1970s. The women’s handball team played in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga from 1994 to 1997. Due to financial reasons the SG Misburg withdrew from the Regionalliga Nord in 2008. The SG Misburg boasts a remarkable record of achievements. Manfred Hass became a German champion in welterweight boxing in 1956. The water polo team won a German title in 1967. This was in the competition for clubs without a winter swimming pool. Karin Engelhardt won the German all-around gymnastics championship in 1979. The women’s team won the German trampoline championship in 1993. The Johann-Piltz-Ring a street in Misburg-Nord commemorates Johann Piltz. He was the long-time chairman of the SG Misburg from 1945-1954 and 1958-1965. Today SG Misburg remains a vibrant sports club. It offers a wide range of sports for people of all ages. It continues to contribute to the sporting life of Hanover. The legacy of SG Misburg is one of resilience strength and sporting excellence.
