Want to discover a place where tradition meets community spirit? Right here we are at SG 1874 Hannover. This is more than just a sports club. It’s a piece of Hanover’s history. SG 1874 is deeply rooted in the city.

Founded in 1874, SG 74 Hannover emerged from the fusion of seven clubs. Six of these clubs originated in Linden. The oldest founding club was MTV zu Linden. It was established on November 5, 1874.

In 1879, the Arbeiterturnverein Linden split off. It later changed its name to Turnerschaft Linden. At the beginning of the 20th century, other parent clubs were founded. LSV Alexandria was founded in 1903. TV Jahn Linden followed three years later. In 1914, Turnklub Linden emerged. It came from the youth club Linden-Süd. In 1923, TSV Linden and DSC Hannover were founded.

The 1930s were marked by mergers. In 1931, TSV Linden, TV Jahn Linden, and Turnerschaft Linden merged. They formed Turngemeinde Linden. A few years later, MTV zu Linden and Turnklub Linden merged. They created Lindener TV. In 1938, it merged with LSV Alexandria to form Lindener TSV. In 1939, Lindener TSV and Turngemeinde Linden merged. They created TSG 74 Hannover. This was a large club with over 1,200 members. In 1940, TSG merged with DSC Hannover. They became DTSG 74 Hannover. The current club was formed in 1965. This happened after a fusion with Volkssportverein Vorwärts Linden.

SG 74 Hannover offers a wide range of sports activities. These cater to all ages and skill levels. Whether beginner or professional, there is something for everyone. The focus is on providing a comprehensive sports program. This promotes physical fitness and mental well-being. A friendly atmosphere and camaraderie are very important. The fun of sports is always the priority at SG 74.

The club’s home is south of the Große Garten. It is located at In der Steintormasch 48. You will find the club grounds here.

In 1943, the women’s handball team qualified. They competed in the final round of the German field handball championship. They won against Eimsbütteler TV and Reichsbahn-SV Münster. The team reached the quarter-finals. There, the Hannover team lost to Kieler TV. After World War II, DTSG became Lower Saxony champion in 1949. However, they failed in the semi-finals. They lost to SC Urania Hamburg in the North German Championship.

The footballers of SG 74 participated. They played in the Gauliga Südhannover-Braunschweig in the 1944/45 season. They were assigned to Staffel 1 of Gruppe Hannover. The team achieved three wins with 22:1 goals. Then match operations were stopped.

Willi Matthias is one of the well-known members. He was a hurdler. He participated in the 1960 Summer Olympics.

SG 74 also supports the Hannover Marathon. It operates refreshment point 11. This is located at Nienburger Str./Wilhelm-Busch-Museum. The club has supported the marathon since 2007.

In October 1963, a new clubhouse was inaugurated. It was created with support from various entities. These included the state of Lower Saxony, the city of Hanover, and the Landessportbund. Also, the economy and extensive donations from members helped a lot. Much love was put into the manual work.

In January 1965, the merger with Volkssportverein Vorwärts Linden took place. This was the final step to today’s Sportgemeinschaft. Besides the existing six sports, three new ones were added. These were korfball, tennis, and table tennis. Badminton, gymnastics, jazz dance, pétanque, volleyball, and parent-child gymnastics are also offered.

In 2019, an information board about the history was set up. It is placed on the club grounds. More information about the club’s history can be found on the website.

SG 74 celebrated its 150th anniversary with a sports and family festival. The focus was on the club’s history and future prospects. This shows how tradition and progress can go hand in hand.
