Have you ever wondered where the first footprints of American soldiers on Galapagos soil were made? Right here, at the humble beginnings of what is now known as Seymour Airport, the story of a unique chapter in Galapagos history came to life. Imagine, in the early days of World War II, the Seymour Island Airfield, a simple airstrip, served as a crucial link between the United States and the South Pacific. These rugged, sparsely populated islands, with their delicate ecosystems and remarkable wildlife, held the key to securing the South American coastline and the Panama Canal from Japanese submarines.

It was April 1942, when the first American troops landed on the island. These soldiers, armed with courage and determination, set up shop on this strategic airstrip. They were part of the US Army Air Forces Sixth Air Force, tasked with safeguarding these vital waterways and their sensitive cargo of supplies, oil, and munitions. For a short but critical period, this humble island became a base of operations for the USAAF, a frontline in the global conflict.

As the war raged, the Seymour Island Airfield buzzed with activity. Several units, including the 52d and 51st Fighter Squadrons and the 3rd and 29th Bombardment Squadrons, made their way to this remote outcropping of land. They were equipped with the formidable P-40 Warhawk fighter planes and the LB-30 (B-24A) Liberator bombers, ready to defend the region from any potential threat. Their arrival put the USAAF in a strategically advantageous position, particularly in the Caribbean, providing vital reconnaissance and protection of the Panama Canal, the lifeline connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

With the end of the war in 1945, most of the US personnel were withdrawn from the island. The Seymour Island Airfield transitioned from a critical piece of military infrastructure into a relic of a bygone era.

In 1963, the Ecuadorian government saw the potential of this forgotten airfield. Commercial aviation began to take root, and the islands, once shrouded in war-time secrecy, opened up to a new era of exploration. The island’s unique beauty, once a hidden secret for soldiers, now became a vibrant, eco-tourism destination.

Today, the Seymour Island Airfield, now known as the Galapagos Ecological Airport, carries on the legacy of this once-secret hub. It’s a testament to the historical significance this island played and the transformation its landscape endured. This first-class airport, the world’s first green airport, has become the gateway to this pristine paradise, welcoming travelers from around the world.
