Built by the British in 1680, it was meant to be a bulwark against attacks. Yet, it was quickly overrun by Sakat. He used it as a stepping stone in his invasion of Bombay. The fort played a crucial role in repelling a Portuguese attack in 1772. Sewri Fort’s walls, constructed from rocks quarried on the hillside, once housed prisoners. Now, it stands as a lonely sentinel overlooking the Sewri mudflats. It’s a prime spot for birdwatchers, especially during the flamingo migration. The fort’s strategic placement allowed it to command a view of the surrounding waters, keeping a watchful eye on the Angrias of Alibaug, the Siddis of Habsan, pirates from Janjira, the Savant from Wadi, and the Dhulap from Vijaydurg.
