Can a church be born in a home? For the Seventh Day Adventist in Accra, the answer is a resounding yes. Here, in the heart of Accra, the Seventh Day Adventist story began not with grand edifices, but within the walls of a simple home. In 1941, Pastor David Narh Agboka ignited a spark that would become the Accra Ministry Project. With just eight baptized members, he held the first services in Mr. Charles Clerk’s house in Osu-Accra. The Seventh Day Adventist in Accra was born. The church continued to grow, adding 18 more members in 1959. The early congregation of the Seventh Day Adventist didn’t have their own building. They moved from house to house, holding services wherever they could find space. They rented spaces, sharing their faith and building their community. Eventually, they established their first church building on Hansen Road in central Accra. This marked a turning point for the Seventh Day Adventist. From this central location, the church spread outwards. New branches sprung up in Labone to the east, Bubiashie to the west, Korle Gonno to the south, and Accra New Town to the north. The Seventh Day Adventist, once a small gathering in a private home, blossomed into a city-wide presence. The Accra City Conference, the governing body of the Seventh Day Adventist in Accra, has a fascinating history. It began in 1894, became formally organized in 1933, and has undergone several reorganizations and renamings, most recently in 2017. The Accra City Conference oversees a large and active membership within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. It extends to surrounding areas, including Ledzokuku Krowor, Adentan, Ga East, Ga West, and Ga South Municipal Assemblies. The Seventh Day Adventist in Accra is a testament to the power of faith, even in humble beginnings. It shows how a small group of believers, nurtured in a home, can grow into a vibrant community that spreads faith and hope throughout a city.
