A towering bronze bust greets you. This is the Severo Ochoa monument. It stands proudly in a plaza. It’s a tribute to a remarkable man. A Spanish physician and biochemist. He won the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He shared the prize with Arthur Kornberg. Their discovery? The mechanisms in the biological synthesis of DNA.

Severo Ochoa’s life was an incredible journey. Born in Luarca Asturias in 1905. His family later moved to Malaga. He was always interested in science. He studied medicine in Madrid. There he was inspired by Santiago Ramon y Cajal’s work. Ochoa decided to focus his career on research.

His early work was groundbreaking. He isolated creatinine from urine. He developed a method to measure small levels of muscle creatinine. This research led to an invitation to join Otto Meyerhof’s laboratory. The Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology in Berlin-Dahlem was at the forefront of biochemistry. Ochoa met other leading scientists there. Otto Heinrich Warburg Carl Neuberg Einar Lundsgaard and Fritz Lipmann.

The Spanish Civil War forced him to leave Spain. He went to Germany then England. Eventually he settled in the United States. There he made his most significant contributions. He worked on polynucleotide synthesis. This was a key to understanding the genetic code. His work culminated in his Nobel Prize.

He returned to Spain in 1985. The country had become a democracy. He served as a science advisor. He died in Madrid in 1993. His legacy lives on. This monument celebrates his achievements. It stands as a reminder of his impact on science. A hospital in Leganes Madrid is also named after him. A metro station serves the hospital. Even an asteroid 117435 Severochoa bears his name. A lasting tribute to a brilliant mind. This impressive sculpture. A testament to a life dedicated to scientific discovery.
