Imagine stepping back in time to the very beginnings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Accra. The story began long before this building even existed. Let’s uncover the roots of this vibrant community.

The Accra City Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church stands as a testament to faith. It also represents perseverance in the face of adversity. The church’s journey in Ghana started in 1894. Accra became a focal point of Adventist activity.

Early missionaries Edward L. Sanford and Karl G. Rudolph arrived in Ghana. They landed in Apam. Rudolph later moved to Cape Coast. This marked the start of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in West Africa.

Cape Coast became the official headquarters in 1895. Dudley Upton Hale led a team of missionaries. They included George and Eva Kerr and G. P. Riggs. They met Rudolph who had moved from Apam.

Francis I. U. Dolphijn was baptized in 1897. Fred and Isaac Dolphijn were also baptized. George Peter Grant joined them. They spread Adventism along the coast of Ghana.

Christian Ackah established the first Adventist school in Cape Coast in 1907. This marked the beginning of Adventist education in Ghana. Kikam became the headquarters for church work in Ghana from 1908.

In 1941 Pastor David Narh Agboka started the church in Accra. He began with eight baptized members. They met at Mr. Charles Clerk’s house in Osu Accra. By 1959 the fellowship grew. Eighteen souls were baptized.

The believers rented houses for worship. They established church buildings in Accra. The first was on Hansen Road. Others followed in Labone, Bubiashie, Korle Gonno, and Accra New Town.

Jesse Gibson played a crucial role. In 1946 he moved the West African Union Mission headquarters. It moved from Ibadan, Nigeria to Osu, Accra. He acquired land at Osu. He built living quarters and an office block.

Gibson’s work was recognized in 1947. He was ordained into the SDA gospel ministry in Accra. William McClements was the Union president at the time.

The Accra City Conference reflects growth. It was established in 1894 and organized in 1933. It was reorganized in 1987, renamed in 2016 and reorganized in 2017.

In 2018 the conference had 28117 members. These members were spread across 90 churches and 43 companies. They ministered to a population of over three million.

Today the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Accra continues to thrive. It serves as a beacon of hope. It is also a center for community engagement. The church’s presence extends far beyond its walls. It impacts lives throughout the city. The Accra City Conference launched a new evangelistic strategy. It aims to involve all church members. They want to reach the world.
