Ever wondered about a church in Paramaribo touched by both devotion and disaster? I’m about to tell you the story of the Santa Rosa Church. This Roman Catholic church has stood as a beacon of faith since 1911. The Santa Rosa Church is not just a place of worship. It’s a landmark.

The story of the Santa Rosa Church begins in the mid-19th century. The Catholic population in Suriname was growing rapidly. To meet the needs of this expanding community, the Loge Concordia building, formerly owned by freemasons, was purchased in 1861. This building was then transformed into a church. It was dedicated to Rose of Lima.

By 1911, the congregation had outgrown the original church. A larger Santa Rosa Church was built. This new church featured two towers. It was consecrated on June 28, 1911. The Santa Rosa Church boasts a deep design with a small square in front. The building includes a high central nave with a flat ceiling. Two side naves complete the structure. It shares a similar color scheme with the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral.

The Santa Rosa Church’s organ was crafted by Jos H. Vermeulen in 1929. The left tower houses two bells. Disaster struck in 1946 when lightning hit the Santa Rosa Church. This lightning strike created a large hole in one of the towers. In 2009, the Santa Rosa Church received a special gift. A Mary statue from the Anthony the Great Church in The Hague was donated. It was placed in an artificial cave in front of the Santa Rosa Church.

The Santa Rosa Church faced more challenges. In 2020, a restoration project began. The building was suffering from leakage and barklice. During the restoration in May 2021, lightning struck both towers. This caused further damage.

Despite these setbacks, the Santa Rosa Church remains a vital part of the community. The clergy house is used by the boy scouts. The church also serves as a concert hall. The Santa Rosa Church stands in the center of Paramaribo. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Santa Rosa Church is one of the largest churches in Paramaribo. It is a testament to faith and resilience.
