Ahoy there mateys. Ever heard tales of a ship that lived many lives? This is the Seute Deern. Right here before your very eyes.

The Seute Deern. A name that whispers of a sweet girl. A three-masted barque with a story longer than her 75-meter length. She wasn’t always this majestic museum ship. Born in 1919 in Mississippi as the Elizabeth Bandi. A humble four-masted schooner built of longleaf pine. Cheaply made. Not destined for a long life. Yet she defied expectations.

She sailed the American East Coast. She carried timber. Changing hands. Changing names. Finally. Hamburg claimed her in 1938. John T Essberger. A Hamburg shipowner. Transformed her into a three-masted barque. Blohm & Voss shipyard oversaw the transformation. The ship received her figurehead. A young woman in traditional Low German garb. She became the Seute Deern ‘sweet girl’ in Low German.

The Seute Deern served as a training ship for sailors during the Nazi era. Post-war. She became a hotel. Then a restaurant ship in Hamburg. Her brick-lined rooms. Making her unsuitable for open seas. She was a floating youth hostel in Delfzijl. The Netherlands. High maintenance costs led to her next move. Emden. Germany. Another attempt to become a restaurant ship. She sank. Rescued. Finally becoming a restaurant ship in Bremerhaven’s Old Port. Eventually. Owned by Bremerhaven itself.

In 1972. The Seute Deern found her final home. A gift to the German Maritime Museum. For decades. She charmed visitors. A restaurant. A unique landmark. Until 2019. A fire. Then a sinking. Damage too extensive. The Seute Deern was deemed a total loss. Scrapped in 2021.

But her story lives on. In the memories of those who sailed aboard. In the tales passed down through generations. And here. In the very air surrounding this place. The Seute Deern. A testament to resilience. A symbol of maritime history. A sweet girl’s enduring legacy.
