Serralves Foundation was established in 1989. Its goal is to raise public awareness of contemporary art and the environment. The Serralves Museum is designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira. He won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1992. Casa de Serralves is a unique example of Art Deco architecture. The Park won the Henry Ford Prize for the Preservation of the Environment in 1997.

Imagine yourself transported back to the 1920s. Carlos Alberto Cabral the second Count of Vizela, envisioned a grand summer residence. It was constructed between 1925 and 1944. He enlisted the help of renowned architect José Marques da Silva. Together, they created Casa de Serralves. It is a stunning Art Deco villa.

The villa combines neoclassical romantic and Art Deco elements. The private residence is spread over three floors. Some original furniture remains. Features like the René Lalique skylight offer glimpses into the lives of Portugal’s industrial elite.

The surrounding park spans 18 hectares. João Gomes da Silva designed these landscaped gardens. They preserve the land’s most important species. The park displays sculptures by Claes Oldenburg and Dan Graham. Richard Serra’s works are also on permanent display here. The park offers a serene escape into nature.

In March 1991, Álvaro Siza Vieira began designing the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art. Construction started five years later. The museum opened in 1999. It provides Porto with a dedicated space for contemporary art. Siza designed the museum to integrate with the surrounding landscape.

The Serralves Museum building spans 13000 square meters. It includes 4500 square meters of exhibition space. These are distributed across 14 galleries. The old Casa de Serralves serves as the foundation’s head office. An auditorium was added in 2000.

The Serralves Museum hosts three parallel exhibitions each quarter. These exhibits feature both Portuguese and foreign artists. The Serralves collection focuses on art after 1968. It includes direct acquisitions donations and works deposited by the State and private collectors.

Serralves also hosts Serralves em Festa. It is a free cultural event held annually. It takes place on the last weekend of May. This 40-hour non-stop festival includes exhibitions music and family activities.

Take a moment to appreciate the architecture. Note the hardwood floors and marble accents. The exterior walls blend stone and stucco. Siza also designed the furniture lighting and signage. Every detail contributes to the museum’s unique atmosphere.
