Before the bustling community emerged, this land was part of the Mission Rancho Lands of San Diego. The King of Spain granted these lands to the Catholic Church. However, Mexico secularized the missions in the 1830s. The land was then divided and sold.
Fast forward to the 1950s, Serra Mesa experienced revitalization. This attracted new residents and shaped the community we know today. The Navy built its Cabrillo Heights housing project here after the Korean War.

The Serra Mesa Community Council held a contest in June 1961. The aim was to officially name the community. Mrs. John Dowling submitted the winning entry: Serra Mesa. She won a savings bond and a gift certificate.
