“Craving a glimpse into Malaysia’s vibrant tapestry?” Seri Kembangan awaits. It is a town of contrasts. This place seamlessly blends its historical roots with modern ambitions. Seri Kembangan is located about 20km from Kuala Lumpur city centre.

Once known as Serdang New Village, Seri Kembangan was established in 1952. The British created it during the Malayan Emergency. Around 15000 Chinese villagers were relocated from Sungai Besi to this area. The villagers had to build their homes from scratch. The British only provided empty plots of land. Imagine the resilience and determination it took to build a community from nothing.

Datuk Yap Pian Hon played a significant role in Seri Kembangan’s transformation. As a young boy, he experienced the hardships of the new village. Later, as an assemblyman, he championed its development. He proposed the name Seri Kembangan. He was inspired by the Malay word “kembang” meaning expand. He envisioned a town that would continue to grow and prosper.

Seri Kembangan indeed grew rapidly. The late 1980s and 1990s saw numerous housing industrial and commercial schemes. Taman Universiti Indah was one of the earliest housing developments. Today, Seri Kembangan boasts modern infrastructure. The KL-Seremban Expressway connects the area to the wider Klang Valley. Several MRT stations are planned on the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya line.

Mines Resort City stands as a testament to Seri Kembangan’s progress. It was once the world’s largest opencast tin mine. Now it is an integrated township. The township includes The Mines Resort & Golf Club and the Palace of the Golden Horses Hotel.

Seri Kembangan offers a wide range of culinary delights. Chinese cuisine is especially popular here. The Yee Kee Porridge Restaurant has been serving customers since 1975. Leong Ya Restaurant is famous for its paper-wrapped chicken. 939 ABC Ice House offers refreshing shaved ice. Take a Shot Studio Café is a hip spot located in a film studio. Iron House Kopitiam serves local delights.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, Bukit Serdang Hiking Trail offers a good workout. Farm in the City is an interactive petting zoo. The Rainbow Bridge over the Kuyoh River is a colorful photo opportunity.

Seri Kembangan is also a hub for education. Universiti Putra Malaysia is located here. This place is strategically located between Kuala Lumpur and Sepang.

Seri Kembangan reminds us of the importance of remembering the past. It also shows us how to embrace the future. The starfruit-shaped mascot harkens back to the area’s history. The fruit was once widely planted in Seri Kembangan.

So, wander through Seri Kembangan. Discover the echoes of its past. Witness the vibrancy of its present. Seri Kembangan is a town that continues to evolve.
