What secrets does a square hold? Serene Square in Johor Bahru whispers tales of a different kind. It seems our Serene Square has a twin. This story isn’t about the tranquil park you see before you, but about a bustling hub in Singapore also named Serene Centre. Picture a four-story building at the corner of Bukit Timah Road and Farrer Road. This Serene Centre was a hive of activity, a mixed-use development with shops, restaurants, and apartments. In February 2025, the Teo family, known for their Super Group coffee empire, purchased Serene Centre for a cool $105 million. Their vision? A transformation. The plan involved a multimillion-dollar renovation. The shops and restaurants on the lower floors were to be revitalized. The apartments on the upper floors? They were destined to become 86 co-living spaces, complete with shared kitchens and lounges. The Assembly Place, a co-living operator, was tasked with managing this ambitious project. Imagine a blend of vibrant retail and modern co-living, all under one roof. This Serene Centre aimed to create a unique community, a place where residents and shoppers could connect. The renovations were slated to begin in April 2025, with a projected completion date in early 2025. So, while we stand here at Serene Square in Johor Bahru, let’s take a moment to appreciate the story of its namesake across the border. It reminds us that even the name “Serene” can encompass a dynamic blend of commerce and community.
