Imagine the roar of the crowd. The Seppl-Herberger-Stadion pulsates with anticipation. This stadium in Mannheim is more than just a field. It is a living monument to local football history.

The Seppl-Herberger-Stadion was originally known as Stadion am Alsenweg. It became the home of SV Waldhof Mannheim in December 1924. For nearly 70 years, it echoed with the cheers and groans of devoted fans. Except for a brief period in the 1980s.

Picture this. It is not 1924 yet. Before this stadium, SV Waldhof played at three different locations. These locations included the “Schlammloch” and the “Sandacker”. The Seppl-Herberger-Stadion marked a significant upgrade for the club.

After the stadium’s partial destruction during World War II, club members rebuilt it. They worked tirelessly until 1954. The rebuilt stadium featured a concrete grandstand. It also had a natural turf pitch.

In 1983 SV Waldhof Mannheim was promoted to the Bundesliga. The main grandstand needed replacing. However, the club played most of its Bundesliga home games at the Südweststadion in Ludwigshafen due to DFB requirements.

The team returned to the Seppl-Herberger-Stadion in the 1989/90 season. This return was a joyous occasion for the fans. Since 1994, the first team has played at the Carl-Benz-Stadion. This stadium is in the Oststadt district. Today, the Seppl-Herberger-Stadion is home to the second team and youth teams of SV Waldhof.

In 1996, the stadium and the surrounding sports complex were renamed. They honored Sepp Herberger. He was a former Waldhof player. He later became a celebrated German coach. The Seppl-Herberger-Stadion is part of the Seppl-Herberger-Sportanlage.

Did you know Bayern Munich once played here? The Seppl-Herberger-Stadion is the only stadium where Bayern Munich has failed to score in a Bundesliga match. Waldhof won 1-0 in 1989.

The Seppl-Herberger-Sportanlage includes the SV Waldhof headquarters. You can access it through the players’ entrance in the main grandstand. There is also another grass field. Plus, there are three artificial turf pitches.

In 2009, the Mannheim-Nord youth development center opened. This was made possible by a donation from Dietmar Hopp. “Bei Dimi” is the SVW’s club pub. It is run by Dimitrios Tsionanis and his brother Pantelis. Dimitrios was once a Waldhof player. The Herbert-Lucy-Halle is also part of the complex. It is home to the SVW handball team. The tennis section of SVW has its courts here, too.

Volunteers painted the stadium facade in the summer of 2014. They added the club and city emblems.

So, as you stand here at the Seppl-Herberger-Stadion, remember the history. Remember the passion. This is more than just a stadium. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of football in Mannheim.
