On a crisp autumn day in Seoul, imagine children’s laughter echoing amidst towering apartment buildings. This is Seoul Wirye Elementary School. Seoul Wirye Elementary School isn’t just any school. It’s a pioneering example of the “Seoul Type” Green Smart Future School. It was chosen through a design contest in 2024, alongside Dunchon Elementary School. Seoul Wirye Elementary School reopened with this innovative design in September 2025. The school building itself is a modern marvel, five stories tall with a basement level, encompassing approximately 4,957 square meters. The architects designed Seoul Wirye Elementary School to be a “Growing Forest.” The design uniquely integrates nature into the school environment. Imagine forest experience-type spaces scattered throughout the school grounds. These spaces are designed for a variety of activities, fostering a connection with nature. A central courtyard further enhances this green element. This courtyard links to various play spaces, promoting environmental and ecological education in everyday life. Seoul Wirye Elementary School is not just green, it’s smart too. The school incorporates customized learning experiences as part of its smart element. Seoul Wirye Elementary School offers a glimpse into the future of education. It stands as a testament to Seoul’s commitment to innovative, sustainable, and nature-integrated learning environments.
