A cultural phoenix rises from industrial ashes right here at the Seoul Thermal Power Plant. This site has transformed from Korea’s first coal-fired power plant to a cultural hub. This transformation embodies Seoul’s dynamic spirit.
Let’s delve into the story of the Seoul Thermal Power Plant. It began its life in 1930 as Korea’s first coal-fired power plant. It was located in Mapo-gu. The plant expanded over time. It became crucial for powering the metropolitan area during the mid-20th century. In 1969, it was renamed Seoul Thermal Power Plant as it switched to heavy oil.
The plant continued to evolve. Units 1 through 3 were demolished. Units 4 and 5 were converted to cogeneration in 1987. This aligned with the government’s energy conservation plan. The plant adapted again in 1993. It began using liquefied natural gas to reduce pollution.
By the late 1990s, Seoul’s population surged. Industrialization increased energy demand. The aging Seoul Thermal Power Plant couldn’t keep up. Safety and environmental concerns arose. Plans to relocate the plant failed.
The Seoul Thermal Power Plant underwent a groundbreaking change. It became the world’s first large-capacity urban underground power plant. Commercial operations started in November 2019. Above the underground plant, Mapo Saebit Culture Forest was created.
Units 4 and 5 of the Seoul Thermal Power Plant are now being transformed. They will become the Dangin-ri Cultural Creative Power Plant. It is scheduled to open in 2025. Unit Four will house a performance hall and exhibition spaces. Unit Five will maintain its original structure. It will serve as a learning center about Korea’s first thermal power plant.
Opened in April 2021, Mapo Saebit Culture Forest offers green space. It blends the history of Korea’s power plants and railroads. The park provides access to the Han River. It also hosts cultural events.
The Seoul Thermal Power Plant stands as a symbol of progress. It highlights Korea’s journey toward self-sufficient power generation. It has tirelessly provided electricity for decades. Now, it offers rest and enriches the environment. The Seoul Thermal Power Plant embodies resilience. It continues to energize visitors today. Just as it once powered the nation.
Korea Midland Power played a key role. It supplied stable power to Seoul. This was achieved through the underground LNG-fired combined cycle power plant. The Seoul Thermal Power Plant continues to make history. It exports its energy technology worldwide.
