Can a school have a birthday? Seoul Onsu Elementary School can. It officially opened its doors on September 1, 1984. This wasn’t its first planned opening though. Originally slated for January, it eventually welcomed students several months later as Seoul Onsu Elementary. The school wasn’t always known by its current name. It started as Seoul Onsu National School, transitioning to Seoul Children’s National School before adopting its final name in 1996. Imagine those first students and teachers, experiencing the fresh paint and the promise of a new academic year in a brand new building. Seoul Onsu Elementary School stands in the Guro-gu district of Seoul. It’s overseen by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. As of May 1, 2023, it educates 809 students with a dedicated staff of 51. The school has seen its share of anniversaries. It celebrated its 30th in 2014, its 32nd in 2016, and is on track to mark its 40th in 2024. The school is part of a larger educational landscape. A 2016 notice from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education referred to the “Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Elementary School Meal Service Operation Plan,” highlighting Onsu Elementary’s place within the city’s educational system.
