Ever wondered what a key to truth looks like? Here it is. This colossal structure before you is the Seoul National University Main Gate. Locally it’s known as “Sha”. It is more than just an entrance. The Seoul National University Main Gate is a symbol of the entire university.

Let’s delve into the story of this iconic landmark. Seoul National University moved to this Gwanak campus in the 1970s. But surprisingly the university lacked a main gate for four years after the move.

In 1977, the university held a vote. Students and professors had to choose from three designs. Option A resembled a famous gate in Jongno. Option B was a modern design featuring four pillars. Option C was a traditional design inspired by the Bulguksa Temple. No design won a clear majority. An advisory committee was formed to create a new design.

The committee included professors from various departments. They focused on symbolizing Seoul National University itself. After much thought, they created the Sha design by hand. Professor Kang Chang-Kyun finalized the design.

Upon its release, the Sha design sparked controversy. Some criticized its departure from the original designs. Some deemed it too avant-garde. Critics called it a symbol for the sake of a symbol. Others defended it as a reflection of the university’s spirit.

Despite the debate, construction began. In February 1978, the Seoul National University Main Gate was complete. The project cost 40 million Korean won.

The Seoul National University Main Gate has become an icon. News broadcasts often feature it in the background. Viewers instantly recognize it as Seoul National University. The gate’s design cleverly incorporates the university’s Korean name. The initial characters form a unique shape. This shape symbolizes the key to truth. The university motto is “truth is my light”.

The Seoul National University Main Gate stands as a testament. It represents Seoul National University’s history and values. Take a closer look at the “Sha”. It is a reminder of the pursuit of knowledge. It embodies the spirit of Seoul National University. A place where truth illuminates the path forward for generations to come.
