The Seoul Education Museum opened on June 15th, 1995. It became a specialized museum. It displays over 12,742 items. The museum explores education in Korea from the Three Kingdoms period around 285 AD to the present. Only about 1,309 items are exhibited.

Over the last 150 years Korea’s education system has changed a lot. Christian missionaries helped open many universities in the late 19th century. During the Japanese occupation the education system changed again. The focus shifted to Japanese history and the writing system. Korean history and culture were neglected.

After independence, the U.S. influenced Korea’s education. New laws were introduced. Compulsory education became a thing. The Korean War caused tragedy. Most schools closed or were destroyed.

The Seoul Education Museum is small but impactful. It is only 597.07 square meters. It features books documents teaching and writing tools. It is a tranquil place. Here you can see education’s role and power. You can understand how it made Korea the country it is today.

The Seoul Education Museum sits in Bukchon Hanok Village. The museum has two main halls. They display books documents and teaching tools. Uniforms from the Joseon Dynasty to the present are also exhibited. Visitors can borrow the uniforms. They can take photos in a realistic classroom mockup.

The Seoul Education Museum is foreigner-unfriendly. There aren’t many English signs. But it is still worth a visit. It is located at 24 Bukchon-ro 5-gil Jongno-gu Seoul. The museum is open weekdays from 9 am to 6 pm. Weekends it is open from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission is free. It’s closed on public holidays. It is also closed on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.
