A blank lacquer box sits invitingly. Its smoothness begs to be touched. Welcome to the Seoul Museum of Craft Art.

This isn’t just any museum. It’s the first public craft museum in Korea. Opened in November 2021 it’s a testament to the city’s commitment to craft. Housed in a remodeled school building it seamlessly blends history with modern art.

The Seoul Museum of Craft Art’s story began with a vision. Former Seoul Mayor Won-sun Park heeded the advice of art historian Dr Hong-nam Kim. Dr Kim believed craft could ignite creativity. She envisioned Seoul as a global leader in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Her vision became reality. The museum opened thanks to city funding and the CRAFT INDUSTRY PROMOTION ACT.

SeMoCA is more than just exhibits. It’s an experience. You’ll find tactile stations. These are designed for visually impaired visitors. The blank lacquer box is one such station. It allows visitors to engage with the art through touch. It’s a bold step towards inclusivity. SeMoCA has since inspired other Korean museums. They too now incorporate such tactile elements.

The museum’s furniture is another unique feature. The ‘Objects 9’ project commissioned nine artists. They created everything from exterior walls to information desks. Even the chairs are works of art. Sit down. Feel the texture of the ceramic bamboo or stone. The museum itself is a testament to the beauty and sustainability of craft.

SeMoCA showcases both traditional and contemporary Korean crafts. While initially focused on Korean works the museum now embraces international collaborations. The Loewe Craft Foundation Craft Prize exhibition was a resounding success. It attracted both domestic and international attention. The museum’s definition of craft isn’t limited to objects. It encompasses the process technique and craftsmanship involved.

The skills of contemporary artisans are incomparable to those of the past. Yet they are inextricably linked. Young artists reinterpret ancient techniques. Dahye Jeong for instance knitted ‘A Time of Sincerity’ using a 500-year-old hat-making technique. Her work won the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize.
