In 1907, modern meteorological observation first began in Wonnam-dong, Gyeongseong. Let’s journey back in time to explore the Seoul Meteorological Observatory. This observatory, located at 52 Songwol-gil, Jongno-gu, stands as a testament to Korea’s rich meteorological history. The Seoul Meteorological Observatory isn’t just a building. It’s a living chronicle of weather observation, from its humble beginnings to its crucial role in modern meteorology. The original structure, built in 1932 and expanded in 1939, has been meticulously preserved. It served as the headquarters for the Korea Meteorological Administration until 1998. The World Meteorological Organization recognized its continuous operation by designating it a “100-year observatory” in 2017. During the construction of the National Meteorological Museum in 2016, the observatory underwent a meticulous restoration. Using architectural drawings from the 20th century, housed in the National Archives, the building was brought back to its original splendor. Inside the museum, you’ll find a treasure. The world’s last surviving rain gauge instrument, the Rain Gauge of the Chungcheonggamyeong Provincial Office, Gongju, predates Western inventions by 200 years. This museum, housed within the Seoul Meteorological Observatory, showcases Korea’s meteorological journey from the Joseon Dynasty to the present day. It holds the distinction of being the first museum dedicated to meteorological science and history in Korea. It also houses another remarkable artifact: a rain gauge from 1441, a testament to Korea’s early advancements in meteorology. The Seoul Meteorological Observatory is more than just bricks and mortar. It is the heart of Korea’s meteorological heritage.
