The history of education in Korea is long and rich. Learning was highly valued. However access to formal education was not widespread until after the Korean War. Before 1945 less than 20 percent of Koreans had formal education. The modern education system is based on a 1968 charter. This charter identifies education as a key aspect of citizenship. It also defines the government’s role in providing education to all Korean children.

Confucianism has greatly shaped education in Korea. Education meant socialization into Confucian virtues. This began in early childhood. Students read the Confucian classics. The ideal was the virtuous scholar-official. He excelled in poetry and statecraft. Students started learning very early. They had to master classical Chinese. This involved memorizing tens of thousands of written characters.

Formal education in Korea started during the Three Kingdoms era. The first public institution was the Taehak. It was founded in 372. It was East Asia’s first formal school outside of China. Modeled after Chinese institutions Taehak taught Chinese language and Confucian classics.

During the Chosun Dynasty the royal court established a school system. These schools taught Confucian subjects. There were schools in the provinces and in Seoul. The Songgyungwan was the Confucian national university.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries modern private schools emerged. Both Koreans and foreign missionaries established them. These schools promoted women’s education. They also spread Western social and political ideas.

The emphasis on education continued into the 20th century. During the Japanese colonial period an educational system was created. It aimed to train Koreans for subordinate roles. It also aimed to make them loyal subjects of the emperor. After liberation in 1945 Koreans demanded access to education.

After the Korean War education became a priority. In South Korea the government spent more on education than anything else except national defense. Today South Korea boasts a literacy rate near 100 percent. It is one of the highest levels of education in the world.

However South Korea faces challenges. The birthrate is low. This has significantly reduced the number of students entering schools. Some schools face difficulties. They struggle to maintain school events and social relations.

Despite these challenges Seoul Maedong Elementary School continues to serve its community. It stands as a symbol of Korea’s commitment to education. It represents a long tradition of learning and growth. As you stand here take a moment to appreciate the rich history and enduring legacy of Seoul Maedong Elementary School.
