Founded in 1912 by Christian missionaries, Seoul Foreign School stands as a testament to over a century of educational excellence. Right here on Yeonhui-ro, Seoul Foreign School began with just 18 students. Now it educates over 1,500 students from more than 50 countries. Seoul Foreign School isn’t just any international school. It boasts a unique blend of curricula. The school offers the International Baccalaureate framework, alongside the English National Curriculum. Seoul Foreign School has been at this location in Yeonhui-dong since 1959. Originally known as Kyungsung Foreign School, Seoul Foreign School adopted its current name in 1964. The school’s first principal was Ethel Van Wagoner Underwood. She was a member of the Underwood family, founders of Yeonhee Professional School, which later became Yonsei University. This connection is geographically relevant too. Seoul Foreign School sits right next to Yonsei University. In 1981, Seoul Foreign School expanded by merging with the British School. This broadened its educational offerings and diversified its student body. Seoul Foreign School pioneered the adoption of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum in Korea. This forward-thinking approach sets it apart. It’s one of the oldest international schools globally and the first in South Korea to offer the IB Diploma. The school provides a diverse range of extracurricular activities, from Model United Nations to Habitat for Humanity. Seoul Foreign School also has a vibrant athletics program. It participates in the Korean American Interscholastic Activities Conference (KAIAC) and the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC). Seoul Foreign School is more than just academics and extracurriculars. It maintains a Christian ethos, reflected in its values and approach to education. While emphasizing Christian values, Seoul Foreign School welcomes students of all backgrounds. This inclusivity is a cornerstone of the school’s identity. Seoul Foreign School boasts an impressive alumni network. Ken Jennings, the Jeopardy! champion, is among its notable graduates. So too are filmmakers, authors, and entrepreneurs. As you stand before Seoul Foreign School, you stand before a legacy of learning, growth, and global citizenship. It’s a place where history and future intertwine.
