Picture this. You stand before the Seoul City Wall a living testament to Seoul’s enduring history. This magnificent structure wasn’t built overnight. Construction began in 1396 during the reign of King Taejo. He had recently relocated the capital to Hanyang present-day Seoul. The wall was essential to defend the newly established city.

Imagine the scene. Over 118000 people were mobilized to build this massive wall. That’s more than twice the population of Hanyang at the time. They toiled for months to create this impressive defense. The initial wall was 18627 meters long. Today about 70 percent of the original wall remains.

The Seoul City Wall is more than just stones. Each section tells a story. Notice the variations in the stonework. Some sections show King Taejo’s original construction using irregular stones. Others reveal the careful craftsmanship of King Sejong’s renovations. His workers used neatly cut square stones. King Sukjong’s repairs further transformed the wall. He employed uniform cubes tightly fitted together.

You can see this impressive history firsthand. The Seoul City Wall storytelling tour highlights different sections. You can easily spend over two hours walking along this historic pathway. The Naksan section is a popular choice. It takes you from Hyehwamun Gate through Naksan Park and Ihwa Village. The tour ends at Heunginjimun Gate also known as Dongdaemun Gate. Along the way you will pass Jangsu Village. This village formed after the Korean War. Refugees and returning residents built homes there.

The wall itself isn’t the only historical element. You’ll encounter stories. Did you know that names of workers were inscribed on some stones? This was done during repairs in 1706 to ensure quality. You will also learn about Dorijang a devoted daughter who cared for her sick father during the construction. King Taejo rewarded her for her dedication.

Naksan Park offers breathtaking views. It’s said to resemble camel humps which is where the name comes from. A notable feature is Hongdeogi Bat. This patch of land was granted to a servant who provided kimchi to a hostage prince. The prince missed the kimchi so much after his release that he gifted the land.

Near Ihwa Village lies a poignant story. King Danjong’s exiled queen longed for her husband from a mountain peak. This peak is known as Dongmangbong meaning peak of longing.

In Changsin-dong you’ll encounter the story of Park Soo Keun. This artist painted his neighbors despite hardship. His paintings are now recognized as masterpieces. This area is rich in layers of stories and beauty.

Walk along the Seoul City Wall. It is a journey through time. You’ll discover more than just stone and mortar. You’ll experience the heart and soul of Seoul.
