Nestled within the Seoul Arts Center, the Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum beckons. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a sanctuary for the art of the written word. The Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum opened its doors in 1988 alongside the Music Hall. It stands as a testament to Korea’s rich calligraphic heritage, the first of its kind in the world. In 2016, the museum underwent a transformation, expanding its space to a sprawling 1,500 square meters. It now houses five exhibition halls. These halls include the Experimental Exhibition Room, Permanent Exhibition Room, and Standing Exhibition Room. The museum proudly holds a collection of approximately 1,300 contemporary calligraphy pieces from East Asia. It also safeguards materials documenting the modern and contemporary history of Korean calligraphy. One notable piece is the “Geunyeokseohwasa,” an ancient document tracing the history of calligraphy across Korea, China, and Japan. The Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum regularly hosts exhibitions that illuminate the journey of Korean calligraphy. The “Special Exhibition on Korean Calligraphy,” launched in 1988, distinguishes Korean calligraphy from its Chinese counterpart. It offers visitors a new perspective on this ancient art form. Beyond its permanent collection, the museum curates special exhibitions.
