Why was the Seoul Anglican Cathedral’s expansion delayed for decades? The Seoul Anglican Cathedral stands before you a testament to faith resilience and a touch of improbable luck. This magnificent church the mother church of the Anglican Church of Korea and the Diocese of Seoul holds a special place in the city’s heart. Its Romanesque Revival architecture designed by Arthur Stansfield Dixon is a stunning example of its style. It’s located near Deoksugung Palace the British Embassy and Seoul City Hall making it a significant landmark. Construction began in 1922 but was interrupted due to financial constraints. Only about half the original design was completed. The cathedral’s official name is the Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin and St Nicholas.

The story of the Seoul Anglican Cathedral is intertwined with the history of Christianity in Korea. The Anglican mission began in 1885 on Ganghwa Island. In 1890 Bishop John Corfe purchased land and a traditional Korean building on the site of the present cathedral. The first service was held that year marking the church’s founding though the grander structure wouldn’t come for decades. It was consecrated as Jang-rim Seong-dang meaning simply church.

The cathedral’s history is marked by both triumph and tragedy. In 1950 during the Korean War the Dean and a priest along with Sister Marie-Clare were martyred by communists. Yet the spirit of the church endured. The dioceses of Seoul and Daejeon separated in 1965. The first Korean bishop of Seoul was inaugurated at the Cathedral. In 1978 the Seoul Metropolitan Government designated the cathedral as Tangible Cultural Property No 35.

The expansion of the Seoul Anglican Cathedral is perhaps the most intriguing part of its narrative. Beginning in 1991 it was a project years in the making. The city initially rejected expansion plans. Then something extraordinary occurred. The original blueprints lost during either World War II or the Korean War were miraculously rediscovered in the archives of the British Museum. A British Museum worker who had visited the partially completed cathedral recognized them. He obtained them and returned them to Seoul. The expansion which followed the original plans was completed in May 1996. This miraculous rediscovery ensured the cathedral’s completion according to Dixon’s vision.

Today the Seoul Anglican Cathedral stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and cultural heritage. It houses a Harrison & Harrison pipe organ installed in 1985. Its mosaic murals add to its beauty. The cathedral played a key role in the June 10th Protest in 1987. It remains a significant landmark a place of worship a piece of living history in the heart of Seoul. It’s more than a building it’s a story etched in stone mosaic and the enduring spirit of the Anglican Church in Korea.
